Common pumps used in the field currently, have and had their place in the oilpatch.

Continuous Pumping System Or CPS

Pump to surface pumps:

This pump action is only on the down stroke allowing a dead time on the upstroke. Settling sand in the oil and/or water falls down the tubing and can cause bridging or packing to occur above and below the intake.

Tubing liner pumps:

These are set below the perfs and have to be stroked very quickly to draw the fluid off both zones, thus causing increased surface and downhole wear. Also, if high fluid levels are encountered the lower zone gas can cause major efficiency losses.

Progressive cavity pumps:

These are placed at the bottom of the lower perfs. While this pump has the velocity to draw down the fluid in a hurry, it can also have efficiency loss due to gas being pulled in to the pump. On some locations there is also a high wear facior on pump components.

This pump will pump from two separate areas in a single stroke!

This pump is moving fluid forward in both direction of the stroke, less settling occurs and therefore, there is less chance of bridging or packing.

It reduces gas locking by bringing the standing valve and the travelling valve only inches apart!

Higher Efficiency!

The volume per stroke is higher because there is fluid in the barrel and in the inside of the kelly on every stroke.

The bottom line is, when you put this pump in a well, it can be placed with the lower intake below the lower set of perfs, while the barrel intake can be placed either above or just below the upper set of perfs.  This allows fluid draw from both zones on the same stroke.
You can achieve great results in volume with a slower stroke, and less wear!
